COPING SKILLS GROUPS
- (1) Self-regulation is on T from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., (2) Assertiveness is
on T from 5:30 to 6:45 p .m. and (3) Mindfulness is on M from 5:45 to 7 p.m.
Each group runs for 8 weeks. Groups
1 & 2 are offered consecutively every few months.
Cognitive behavioral and Dialectical behavioral techniques are used to
foster skill development. Start
dates are based on enrollment. An
intake appointment can be scheduled to join a group.
Self-regulation group is
oriented around daily stress management techniques, increased emotional
awareness and the ability to verbalize feelings.
The identification, expression, and physical aspects of mood are
addressed. Cognitive and
behavioral strategies are reviewed. The
prevention of distress and crisis management are covered.
Assertiveness group is oriented around the development of communication
skills that are the foundation of healthy relationships.
Expression of wants and needs and saying no are some of the skills
reviewed. Strategies for mismanaged
anger and to how to attend to relationships are discussed.
The foundation of self-esteem improvement skills are integrated into the
group.
Mindfulness group is oriented on the development of attention and
concentration skills while being an active participant in life.
Step by Step skills are offered to learn this strategy. The focus of
directing your mind to be in the present is central.
Mindfulness is often thought of as a coping strategy and a relaxation
technique. Breathing and awareness
exercises are practiced.
Group
Therapy is almost always covered by the mental health portion of insurance even
if you are also involved in individual therapy.
If referred by
a licensed mental health therapist a $35 per group rate is available as a
private pay option. This is the
minimum sliding scale rate for individuals with modest incomes.
